I wish I’d seen this in the moment…although I suspect it would have freaked me right out!
I’m fairly certain I’ve used this here blog of mine to rant about the appalling state of American coffee. Thankfully, espresso bars, houses and cafes are opening all over the city and Antipodeans are no longer forced into an overly sweet smelling Starbucks for a fix. I was delighted to find this small article in last week’s issue of NY Mag about the alleged ‘flat white movement’ spreading across our dear city… Australian for “Coffee”.
Image: courtesy of NY Mag Has my absence made your heart grow fonder? Feel free to lie to me 4 months ago I started a full-time job. A coincidence that MNYD has been all but abandoned in the past 4 months? No. It has been an intense time, with long days, changeable hours and plenty of time spent in the deep end… but I LOVE it! Or at least, I should say, that I’ve come to love it. The first couple of months were exciting, intimidating, and more than a little stressful. I’ve had to push myself to do things I’ve never done before, learn new skills, acquire new knowledge and dig deep to undertake tasks that were waaaay out of my comfort zone (like public speaking!). Along the way I’ve had to face the fact that I produced some pretty mediocre results at times too – not easy for me to admit! But of course, much of this is to be expected in a new job – especially when you’ve undertaken an industry change – and now that I’m over the initial hump of learning the ropes things are on the up and up and I’m really enjoying the challenges. So what am I actually doing? I work for Complexity NZ Fine Wine. If you want to know more about what we do, see our website here. As for what I do… well I take care of all online communications, provide event support and do anything that frees my boss up to do her thang. Bottom line is this:
And it’s the first time in my life that I’ve been genuinely inspired by my work and fricken excited about the possibilities.
Next week we’ll be hosting our first proper dinner party. Until now, we’ve only really hosted a few meals around our coffee table while our dining table has lain dormant. Having people over for dinner was something we did on a weekly basis back in Melbourne – in fact we were kind of known for it – so it has been a most odd thing for our apartment to remain so quiet on weekends. When we moved to New York, I took the opportunity to get rid of the chairs we had before we left Melbourne. Although they matched our table perfectly, were retro and literally everyone but me liked them, I found them too masculine and didn’t really enjoy sticking to the vinyl during meals. I managed to sell 4 out of those 5 chairs and the lonely left-behind chair came with us to New York (along with our dining table). For 18 months we’ve had a dining table in our apartment with just that one lonely chair. For ages they served as my workspace but I recently upgraded to a desk and a real office chair which now lives in our bedroom. The dining table has been restored to its rightful purpose and very soon will have lots of little chair friends…. 4 stools and a bench!
The stools actually arrived already, but when the bench is delivered, we’ll have an assortment of seating effects for guests to choose from. And why has all this happened after 18 months?…. because I got a new job! An awesome job, which I’ll tell you more about in my next post. Maybe its my marketing side but I always appreciate a good advertising campaign. Manhattan Storage have a great series of very cheeky billboards and posters up around the city at the moment. Here are a couple that I captured on my iPhone recently. Another that we saw while driving into the city after Irene said:
Mwahahahahahaaa! See more at their flickr stream…
One of our favourite discoveries this summer was Blue Crab Night at The Hideaway. Any chance we get we take our friends to this cool, darkened retreat from the heat in Tribeca for a carnivorous feast of Maryland Blue Crabs… washed down with plenty of crisp, cold white wine of course! We have guests coming to stay next week. Guests that stayed here almost a year ago to the day. Somewhere over the weekend it occurred to me that almost nothing about our apartment has changed since those guys last visited. This I cannot have, as I distinctly recall complaining about how “vanilla” our apartment was back then; I cannot have them arrive to see that all we’ve managed to do in the past year is to hang a couple of small prints! I mean cripes, we still don’t have dining chairs! (Although, on that count we’ve tried very hard to find some, I swear.) I’ve spent the best part of today trying to create mood boards for each space in the apartment. So far I’m pretty happy with the home office collection….
